Root Canal Therapy allows the patient to keep a tooth that other wise would have needed to be extracted. Root Canal Therapy is needed when any opening in the tooth has allowed bacteria to reach the nerve of the tooth that causes an infection.
A Root Canal is treatment of the canal inside the root of the tooth where the nerve lives. It consists of removing the nerve, cleaning and sealing the canal with a specialized filling material. Because the nerve is removed the tooth dries out and therefore must be strengthened and protected with a post and a crown.
Most patients experience little or no discomfort following Root Canal Therapy.
